Another excellent release by the label Purity Through Fire, this time we are talking Greek black metal, delivered by the band Sad. The band has been active since the middle of the ’00s and released a number of full-length albums and split album since.
“Misty Breath of Ancient Forests” is what you can call a raw, fast, and quite melodic album. The tempo is high, the guitars are sharper than a razor blade and there are some variations in the music, even if it’s most of the time is attack with full force.
This is cold, dark, and grim with vocals of anger, rage, and fury, high-pitched screamy vocals that make you think of some excellent Finnish black metal bands, like Sargeist, Horna, and Behexen to drop a few names. But, it is no question that Sad have picked up some inspiration in Norway and in particular, Darkthrone. Then I am thinking about the early albums, after Soulside Journey.
So, if you’re a fan of intense, raw black metal with some fast, sharp, and melodic guitars, and vocals that could crush glass (or your soul), then pay attention to this Greek duo, Sad.
The two members in Sad have divided the tasks so that Nadir is handling the vocals, and Ungod takes care of the other duties. It is in itself quite common in black metal duos with a division of labor like that.
1. Self Hatred
2. Enjoy Your Pettiness
3. Misty Breath Of Ancient Forests (part I)
4. White Death
5. Hellish Ride
6. Misty Breath Of Ancient Forests (part II)
7. Hades Gazing

Sad - Misty Breath of Ancient Forests
Greet black metal band Sad is excellent and this album, “Misty Breath of Ancient Forests” is so as well. It’s like the whole album is one long song, with different chapters, they stick to their thing all through, and they are doing it right. This may not be fresh, rather the opposite, but the ’90s rawer black metal is nice to hear, and here it’s in a bit more of modern form and sound.
To pick highlights or favorite songs on an album that you like as a whole, but the ones that stand out a little to me are “White Death”, “Hellish Ride” and the albums closing tune, “Hades Gazing”.
Would I buy this album?
Yes, this one is on my “to buy” list. The autumn and winter seem to be really expensive for me, record-buying-wise. Someone needs to sponsor me, I will be ruined before the end of the year if I am going to buy all the excellent albums that I have reviewed this autumn!
