Horncrowned – Rex Exterminii (The Hand of the Opposer)

Intense, fast, and aggressive black metal from Bogota in Colombia, performed by the band Honrcrowned. Delivered in form of the band’s latest album, “Rex Exterminii (The Hand of the Opposer)“, to be released on November 20, 2020, through Ketzer Records.

The band has been around for almost twenty years now, first album was released back in 2003. With this album included, the band has done five full-length albums, one live album, one split album, and three EP’s.

Honrcrowned and this album, “Rex Exterminii (The Hand of the Opposer)” is a black metal attack, like if you get run over by a tank, almost from start to finish. But along the way, they settle down a little now and then, and there are some nice twists and turns here and there, great guitars that can be described as quite melodic.

The drums are fast and blasting, which will punch you in the stomach if you have a great hi-fi set-up where you are listening, or, if using great headphones, it will punch your brain hard.

This may not be the album of choice to put on if you have your grandparents over for a coffee or your neighbors. But, your neighbors will hear this tank of black metal through the walls when you crank it loud, they may not come over and ask you to play louder.

This is for fans of fast, intense blasting black metal, but yet with some stains of melodies and variations. This is somewhere in between when Marduk is doing their fast songs (not their fastest), a little 1349, and also Honrcrowned‘s former countrymen, Inquisition, with some melodies in a similar style to Dark Funeral, when they are doing their fastest tunes.

Honrcrowned is doing it really well on “Rex Exterminii (The Hand of the Opposer)“, it is a nice balance between too aggressive and somewhat melodic, always intense, lots of anger and fury.

The vocals are kind of “typical” black metal when it comes to this type of music, screamy and fast, always staying at the higher shriek tones, without heading to the higher-pitched type of vocals.

Honrcrowned will not give you much rest from their blast beats, fast guitars that go on and off, and the demonic vocals all mixed up with like a fog of melodies that lays over the music most of the time.

This is for sure something that I needed at this miserable period of my life, Colombian black metal band Horncrowned and their latest output “Rex Exterminii (The Hand of the Opposer)” bring some intense joy to my life.

When I heard the opening track of the album, also the title track, “Rex Exterminii (The Hand of the Opposer)” there was some riffs and structure there that made me think of something else. I am going crazy, can’t figure out what my twisted brain is aiming at. I will have to leave that to others! Around 1.30 in the first tune, the title song, “Rex Exterminii (The Hand of the Opposer)” they are on track and I can leave that thought (can I?).

This is an excellent blasting, demonic riffing but yet melodic in some way (according to me) album that should be interesting for the ones who want their black metal to never give them a rest, thing is that I am one of those at times and today is a day like that, so, blast this one loud as fuck in some excellent headphones or speakers! Highlights appear to me a bit after half the way into the album, the seventh track “Die Judicii” and the following track, “Confrontation”, the song “Armamentarium” (and it’s riffs/guitars), and the second track, “The Second Death” can also be a part of that “group” of songs.

Would I buy this album?
Yes, that is for sure! The question, is there any online shop that I can trust where I can buy this album? And, can I afford this autumn/winter and all the great albums coming? The answer is sadly no. We’ll see.
