Auðn – Vökudraumsins fangi

Icelandic atmospheric black metal band Auðn, return with the brand new album “Vökudraumsins fangi“, to be released through Season of Mist on October 30, 2020.

Vökudraumsins fangi” is the bands third album, their self-titled debut was released in 2014, three years later, in 2017 the second album, “Farvegir fyrndar” was released, and now, three years later they return with the new album, “Vökudraumsins fangi“.

Auðn should not be new to anyone who is into this type of music, call it atmospheric, progressive, or melodic black metal. One fact that is clear is that Auðn‘s music is very guitar-based, and the fact that they have three guitarists will explain the excellent guitars all through the album.

The ones who like the band’s earlier albums will hear that it is still Auðn, but the sound is more massive this time, still cold and frosty, melancholic, somehow emotional black metal.

The vocals are as on the previous albums, screamy and melodic, with just enough amount of angst and fury. As on the band’s previous albums, the vocals are in Icelandic and I think it suits the music in an excellent way, I just wish now that I could understand the language.

Auðn is not for the ones who don’t like guitars and melodies, Vökudraumsins fangi” is filled with excellent razor-sharp guitars, hooks, and twists and at time Auðn delivers music that I think could fit as relaxing music when you need to calm down and fall into sleep, but that is if you’re into black metal, others would never find rest while listening to this album.

The fact that the band has three guitarists will send you a hint, that this is a massive guitar-based album, that will take you on a journey through the landscapes of a cold and frosty Iceland, and if you are into any form of melodic extreme metal, do your self the service and check out this band!

Summary

Auðn did it once again, they even strike higher with this album, “Vökudraumsins fangi”, compared to their two previous albums. This is a collection of atmospheric / melodic black metal hits and it’s impossible to choose favorite songs among the ten songs on this album! But if I have to choose, can’t really see why I have to, but anyway, then I would go for the eight song “Á himin stara”, the one following, “Ljóstýra” and the album closing track, “Vökudraumsins fang”, the guitars and the piano is something else! This album will for sure be on my Top 10 list of 2020!

Would I buy this album?
Hell yes, it’s pre-ordered on vinyl already! Now I just need to try not to listen to this digital promo more, need to save it for the arrival of the vinyl!
